Hong Kong cabs are all measured, relatively inexpensive, air-conditioned and pristine. There are three kinds of taxi, each of which is indicated by its colour: Rot for urban cabs, green for new areas, and blue for Lantau Island with additional fees from HK$1.2 to HK$1.7 for each additional 200m (depending on taxi type).

Except for some very isolated areas, there are numerous cabs in Hong Kong. Taxi services are normally stopped lightly along the road, although they cannot take up or set down people in certain prohibited areas. It is often a good option to choose either a taxi line in a guesthouse or a taxi rank.

In case the taxi does not work, the taxi operator is obligated to present a handwritten receipts. They are all regular and taxi riders must show their ID on the dashboard. In case you cannot see the taxi number, the small printed number or the fare on the voucher, ask for a handwritten one. In the event that you experience a problem when using a taxi in Hong Kong, such as suspicion of overloading, note the name and registration number of the taxi operator as shown on the taxi operator's ID on the instrument panel.
