Taxis in New York begin charging higher fares

Gelbe Steueris can start levying additional charges on Tuesday and introduce an authorised price hike for drivers whose prices have practically stayed the same since 2006. Tuesday, the city's taxi and limousine commission published a notice to the effect that taxi owners will be able to put the new tariffs - which raise tariffs by around 17 per cent - into effect from Tuesday, 12:01 p.m. as soon as they have re-calibrated their counters and upgraded the official label.

There will be no obligation for tariffs to be introduced by operator until their first planned inspection after 30 September, so the city's taxi fleets are likely to contain a mix of old and new tariffs for the coming week. In July the European Union authorised the raise. However, the costs for every fifth kilometre travelled, or for every 60 seconds in stop or slower travel, will go up from 40 to 50 euro cent, adding to the burdens on long distance travellers.

Journeys between Kennedy International Airport and Manhattan will go up by $7 to $52 plus toll fees. Newark Liberty International Airport will also be awarded a $15 to $17.50 supplement. In 2004, the last nationwide tariff hike took place when the measured tariffs went up by around 26 per cent. During 2006, the city raised the tariff for every time a taxi was pulled over or moved slow.
