In the 1980', when Ross Johnson was managing director of the tobacco-to-cake RJR Nabisco group, he sent Rocco, his favorite hound, on a 2,000 mile corporate jet outing. RJR Nabisco sneaked Rocco to one of 10 RJR Nabisco personal jet's, registered as a " Read Shepherd " and flew from California to the group's head office in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, with an officer as chaperon.
While it would be difficult to find the leader of a public group doing something so monstrous in 2016, the S&P 500 companies' overall spending on business aviation in 2013 and 2014 was still around $40 million a year. It is a relatively small amount in comparison to the billion US dollar spend on wages and bonus payments, but it is large enough to be seen by some investor as a bad corporate Governance signal.
This Rocco Episode was not the only case of surpluses on board the Nabisco aircraft, known as the RJR Air Force and piloted by 36 corporate airlines. Company jet airfares are just one of many benefits that have been provided to executive officers by the appropriate bodies over the years, along with rent-free accommodations and membership in country clubs .
It has become most firmly established in popular awareness, a shining example of entrepreneurial machism, exclusiveness and disparity. In 2006, the US Securities and Exchange Commission introduced the new regulations amid concerns that corporations are actually compensating managers for more than they tell an investor by distributing free gifts such as personal jet travel, tax allowances and luxurious club membership.
The majority of S&P 500 firms still run or rent privately owned aircraft on the assumption that US business aviation, afflicted by long flight schedules and long safety periods, is uneconomic for managers receiving $1 million annually. For example, Goldman Sachs does not allow Lloyd Blankfein, its CEO, to use the corporate jet for his vacation, while Jamie Dimon, his JPMorgan colleague, spends less than $50,000 in 2014 on corporate jet chartering.
Leucadia, the owners of the Jefferies mutual fund, have increased the amount Leucadia makes available to its senior management for free private air travel from $435,000 in 2005 to approximately $1 million a year. Apple's CEO Tim Cook does not get the benefit, although the firm bought its forerunner, the deceased Steve Jobs, a private jet that in 1999 costed $90 million.
Each of the three firms indicated that they were paying less than the prevailing price. Those payment shall not be considered as a benefit to managers. On the other hand, several relatively small enterprises were large donors. Free Report McMoRan, the world' s largest manufacturer of aluminum, silver and aluminum, ranked number 354 in the S&P 500 by commercial value, but in 2014 invested $1.2 million in private jet transportation - more than any other firm.

In comparison to other company free jets, travelling by private jet is quite costly. Firstly, the amounts revealed by the airlines do not represent the actual costs; they are only obliged to disclose the "incremental" costs - the fare of a particular ticket - which they charge according to a calculation between $5,000 and $7,000 per hour. However, they are not obliged to disclose the actual costs.
In this case, the overhead of ownership or leasing of the jet or the purchase of a new jet is ignored if it needs to be substituted. While companies can use deduction to compensate executive salaries or bonus payments, they cannot do so for private jet journeys. Enabling their managers to use the aircraft for face-to-face journeys, the firm failed to make allowances to which it would otherwise have been eligible.
But not all managers are supporters. Former Allergan CEO between 1998 and 2015, David Pyott, says he "consistently fought a corporate jet or even a jet stock during his term at the firm.
