Israel's Urban Aeronautics has been working for over ten years on a design for a truck-sized flying aircraft that can fly to places even heliplanes can' t get to. A few and a half years ago, the AirMule, a future aircraft, completed its first unbound mission. AirMule's original AirMule design was named X-HAWK LE, but the experience from the Lebanon War in 2006 really gave the initial boost to the notion.

Ever since, the idea has been successfully tried out in various subscale and now on a large scale. 1. AirMule is a VTOL -only (vertical take-off and landing) construction and uses mounted, fan-like lifting rotor blades connected to a main power plant for the drive. At the moment the jet is a 730 hp Turbomecca Arriel 1D1 jet, but the serial airplane is equipped with a 985 hpjet.

Empty, the plane weights nearly 1,700 lbs and has a maximum total of 3,100 lbs, giving it a decent load capacity. It' s capable of flying at 100 knot and up to 18,000 ft, so it's not just a VTOL innovation. In addition, the AirMule is considered a primarily pilotless airplane, but it is also possible to use crewed airplanes.

Unaccompanied helidecks and other verticals are rapidly becoming one of the most highly anticipated segments of the high-end market for UAVs. AirMule could find a singular place within this upcoming range of services. Really, AirMule's nearest to that flying automobile out there. Municipal aviation provides many mission opportunities for this new technolog.

First, the idea is for medical replenishment and medical evacuation mission, and these are both areas that are being militarised, looking for innovations, but this is only the beginning. The AirMule could even become an aerial taxicab or even a flying automobile that travels from block to block in tightly packed areas of the city. Passenger transport will remain an option for the city airline, which has set up a wholly owned affiliate named Metro Skyways, which will be developing a vehicle-size VTOL aircraft for the civil aviation sector using many of the AirMules technology.

It closes the loop because X-HAWK was considered capable of offering similar skills. While the urban aviation vision is thrilling, there is still a long way to go to demonstrate not only its basic skills, but also its dependability, manageability and costeffectiveness. In addition, an increase in body mass could very quickly destroy this approach - something we have seen in innumerable VTOL researches.

Though it can go where choppers can't, its unconventional styling can be a barrier to reaching a place in a packed chopper market. At the end of the day, every airplane has its compromises. But the AirMule is also an interesting flying device for these problems. When Urban Aeronautics can keep these promise, this vision could have a very good and profitable time.
