Footsteps to becoming an NYC taxi driver: The New York City Taxi Driver Licence is granted by the Taxi and Limousine Commission (TLC). Licences shall be granted for a trial of one year and may thereafter be extended by two years. In order to obtain a taxi licence, you need a New York State DMV Chauffeurs Licence and are at least 19 years old.

Drivers can obtain a driver's pass by paying a visit to their New York, New Jersey, Connecticut or Pennsylvania DMV (Department of Motor Vehicles). You must have a New Yorker licence that is either a grade A, B, C or D licence. You should not have more than 7 DMV points within the 18 months prior to your request.

Send a copy of your driver story from your DMV (Department of Motor Vehicles). The certified abstract (State Driver Record) must be either branded or unsealed and must not be older than 30 calendar months from the date of submission. Requests must contain a TLC Health Care Card that has been filled out and autographed by a physician.

In case your licence comes from New Jersey, Connecticut or Pennsylvania, you need a certificate from your DMV that you have no open penalties. This course lasts 6 lessons, costs approximately $50 and must be finished within 6 month of submitting your resume. Candidates must enrol in an accredited taxi training centre for either the 80 hour or 24 hour course.

The Taxi and Limousine Commission says, "Attending the 80 hour course will increase your chance of pass the taxi test because it will cover extra materials not included in the 24 hour course". You must complete the taxi course before you can take the examination and both must be taken at the same taxi academy.

Fill out the Taxi & Limousine Commission (TLC) Driver Registration Form and have Form A certified. Royalties (1 year license fee of $60 monthly order, to be paid to: For NYC Taxi & Limousine Commission or Visa, Master Card, AMEX or Discover - see TLC website for updated information. Documented evidence that you have visited an accredited taxi academy and successfully passed the corresponding examinations.
