The North American Aviation Group was a wholly owned business unit of Global Aviation Holdings, Inc, formerly Global Aero Logistics, Inc. In contrast to the other carriers that belong or belonged to Global Aviation, ATA Airways (no longer active today) and World Airways (no longer active today), North American was established in the USA after the flight companies were deregulated. New ATA Holdings, Inc. acquired the mother of North American Air Lines, World Air Holdings, Inc., on April 5, 2007 and immediately renamed the corporation to Global Aero Logistics, Inc. to meet the global needs of the last few shareholders.
MatlinPatterson, the same business, recently sold Varig at the end of March 2006, although they continue to have interests in their former freight affiliate VarigLog (LC). On February 26, 2009, the name of the entity was changed to Global Aviation Holdings, Inc. In March 2014, North America closed for insolvency purposes.
North American Airlines plans to suspend regular services in May 2008 on February 19, 2008 to focus on charter operations[6] According to a press statement on northamericanair.com, "What makes the NAA's regular services unsustainable is the rise in aviation oil prices, with aviation oil prices up 60 per cent since 2005.
NAA's Boeing 757/767 state-of-the-art fleets are in high demand and NAA will deploy these planes profitable in the charter market". South American Airlines has suspended its flight to Hawaii effective September 1, 2005. Before Delta Air Lines launched a flight between New York City and Accra, Ghana, on December 11, 2006, the NAA New York-Accra and Baltimore-Banjul were the only planned non-stop flights between the U.S. and West Africa operating by a U.S. carrier for several years [citation required].
Previously, Aguadilla was in Puerto Rico, Santiago and Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic. Most of the company's activities were in the North American charter business: resort airlines such as Club Med and travel agents in Hawaii and the Caribbean regularly charter North American aircrafts. North American Airlines operated purely as a charter carrier until 2014, following the discontinuation of regular services in May 2008.
