Amazon.com Trials Parcel Delivery Service (NASDAQ: AMZN)
Fascinating new from Seattle last week: AMZN (NASDAQ: AMZN) may be considering purchasing its own aircraft in order to manage the company's supplies. The Seattle Times reports that Amazon operates a test shipping facility in Wilmington, Ohio, at an international destination that once served as a DHL US Express hubs.
A nameless firm (probably Amazon) has rented five Boeing Co. and ( NYSE: BA) about what the sector refers to as "wet lease". A leasing contract of this kind contains airplane rental, crew, maintenance as well as trainings team, a kind of parcel shipment. The Seattle Times reports that the undisclosed consignor flew from Wilmington to Allentown, Pa., Ontario, California, Tampa, Fla. and Oakland, California.
Amazonia has sales centres close to all four major international aerodromes. Friday's report says Amazon would rent up to 20 Boeing 747s to transport its goods, four-fold the number of aircraft currently in service. In addition to many other factors, the aircraft available is important. One new Boeing 767-300 cargo ship has a listed cost of 199.3 million dollars.
A new aircraft would probably still be worth at least $100 million even after the normal rebate on listed fares. As The Seattle Times states, renting a new 767 between 600,000 and 650,000 dollars per months is costing. That'?s a bunch of cash, even for Amazon. Thus, the enterprise is likely to either buy or rent used M767s.
A 767-300ER used airliner can be between 5.5 and 65 million dollars. One month's rent can range from $150,000 to $480,000. The acquisition as well as the leasing rates depend on the aircraft's cell aging. FederEx has also placed an optional 50 aircraft. By then, the fedEx aircraft fleets comprised 23 767-300 aircraft and another 37 had already been ordered.
When Amazon chooses to operate its own aircraft fleets, the business must be able to fill its aircraft all year round, not just during the vacation time. This would put Amazon in face-to-face opposition with FedEx and UPS, and this is not a good place for Amazon's cargoallengers.
It has shown over and over again that Amazon is about gaining access to markets, not profit margin, and by renting planes it can eliminate many of the overheads that other large supply companies cannot bear. It is anticipated that Amazon will make a final announcement on the expansion of the testing programme by the end of January.
