Maggie Gyllenhaal and James Spader explore the relation between a domineering attorney and his humble secretary. After a hospital stay, Lee Holloway (Maggie Gyllenhaal), the youngest child of a disfunctional familiy, is a social uncomfortable and emotional youngest girl who adapts to everyday living after an accident with serious self injuries.

Rebecca is learning to typ and is applying for a secretary position for an excentric lawyer, E. Edward Grey (James Spader). Gray declares that she is over-qualified for the position (having earned more points than anyone he has ever interviewed) and that it is "very boring work" because they only use a typewriter, but Lee agreed to work under these circumstances.

Although Grey at first seems very confused by Lee's typing errors and other harmless errors, it quickly becomes clear that he is excited as a result of her submissive behaviour. Grey, however, shows uncertainty about his feeling for Lee, and he senses disgrace and embarrassment about his own personalities. While exploring with Grey, Lee also tried to have a more traditional friend with Peter (Jeremy Davies), who even had tepid love with him.

Grey Lee fire after a sex meeting in Grey's work. While she tries on her dress, she walks to Grey's studio where she explains her affection for him. Grey, still unsure about her relation, Lee tries by ordering her to seat on his seat without touching her hand or foot until he comes back.

It takes an hour for several members of the Lee household and friends to go to Lee one by one to take turns trying to discourage or encouragement them, while Grey watched from a distance, which was fully taken over by Lee's observance. She has received messages in the press about Lee's unwillingness to vacate the agency that she considers a starvation strik.

Grey comes back to the cubicle three nights later and brings Lee to a room on the upper floor where he baths and cooks. The Secretary was named a nominee for a number of honours and won several, including many victories for Maggie Gyllenhaal's groundbreaking achievement.
