We examine the effect of non-linear tariff patterns on taximarkets using an enhanced taximodel with explicitly considering observed rentability. Anticipated profits, measured as the profits per hour (including busy and empty taxi times) that a taxi operator would expect when collecting a client in a particular region or place, have a major influence on the taxi operator's selection of locations when searching for clients.

Tariff structures directly regulate the return on taxi journeys at different distance from different sites. On the basis of these explicitly stated observations, the expanded paradigm will examine the impact on the markets of the introduction of a non-linear tariff system with decreasing additional costs. This non-linear tariff scheme could help to re-establish equal opportunities for taxi companies whose companies are affected by some taxi driver recourse practice, such as offer of reduced prices or acceptance of passenger enquiries for long-haul journeys at reduced rates.

Analyzing the sensitivities of benefits and revenue growth and taxis'/customers' waiting/search periods in relation to the non-linear tariff design parameter for the Hong Kong taxi industry, pareto-enhancing non-linear tariff changes are detected that neither discriminate against a client nor decrease taxi operators' revenue.
