MacBook Air could be updated later this year by Apple.

Rumor has it that sometime in 2018, the MacBook Air could kick off an entry-level 13-inch MacBook, according to supplier intelligence sources. And Kuo says that a 13-inch MacBook Air is probably on its way to 2018. Apple researcher quotes a publication at the end of 2018, which means the new Air may only be a few month away.

And he continues that a MacBook "with a lower price" will be on the shelf in the second half of 2018, as will new additions to the iPad Pro line and perhaps even a new Apple Watch. Previous reporting suggests that the new MacBook Air could have been released early this year, but had to be postponed due to "key component" issues.

QC has always been one of Apple's strongest complaints, but given the recent complaints lodged about QC problems on the MacBook Pro keypad, probably the best option to another PR fire storm was to play it by ear and track the publication. Currently, the Cheapest MacBook Air has a 13.3-inch display and sold for $999.

MacBook Air has been disregarded by Apple in the last few days when it is due for larger upgrades, so it would make good business of either withdrawing the once-popular book in favour of a back to shape or building a new one with a more readily available pricing label. Years ago, the entry-level MacBook of the moment was the sleek old 13.3-inch MacBook, covered in single layer blackycarbonate.

In 2011, it was replaced by the MacBook Air, which has since earned its much sought-after $999 point. Apple's latest MacBook line upgrade was in 2017 with the launch of Intel's seventh-generation Kaby Lake CPUs in its high-end offering. The 13-inch and 15-inch MacBook Pro got the new CPUs, and both the high-quality 12-inch MacBook and the entry-level MacBook Air saw a small increase in CPU speeds.

MacBook Air hasn't seen a significant upgrade in MacRumors since 2015 and is the only MacBook product that doesn't have one of Apple's distinctive Retina screens. This alone could be the big shift that will come later this year in the MacBook product line - an entry-level MacBook with a retina screen and/or an even less expensive MacBook Air.

Additional information that points to low-cost MacBook Air could come this year.
