Investigation of Presidential Commission against SriLankan Airlines begins

The Presidential Commission nominated to examine the evidences of the incidents that have occurred at Sri Lankan Airlines and Mihin Airlines and Sri Lankan Food and Drink companies began its review of the evidences today (04 June). A 4-member commission led by lawyer J.C. Weliamuna was previously formed to examine the allegations of bribery that took place during the Rajapaksa regimes.

The Commission's findings in its reports reveal a large number of cases of bribery and recommend that investigations be opened and the legislation rigorously enforce. Proceedings of the Commission reported that Prime Minister Ranil Wickramasinghe was formally delivered on April 1, 2015. Eventually this story became a story, while News1st later uncovered several cases of SriLankan Airlines bribery.

Against this background, the President drew his President's attention to the appointment of a Presidential Commission to examine accusations of bribery in Sri Lankan airlines, Mihin Airlines and Sri Lankan caterers. The retired Supreme Court Justice, Anil Gunaratne, was nominated Chairman of the Commission, while the remainder of the Commission is composed of the Appeal Justice E.A.G.R. Amarasekera, the retired Supreme Court Justice Piyasena Ranasinghe, the retired Auditor General M.D.A. Harold and Ms W.J.K. Geeganage of the Sri Lanka Accounting and Auditing Standards Association.

It has been instructed to investigate the allegations of bribery which occurred between 6 January 2006 and 31 January 2018. Speaking before the record of evidentiary material, additional Prosecutor General Neil Unamboowe, who made a declaration that the investigation so far had revealed that Sri Lankan Airlines had made a 143 billion euro and 167 billion rupees debt deficit between 2006 and 2018, said that the company's financial statements had been inaccurate and that the company had not been able to recover any of its losses.

Moreover, Mihin Lanka had made a 17 billion rupee deficit with debts of over 10 billion rupees. SriLankan Airlines, SriLankan Catering and Mihin Lanka have sustained casualties due to maladministration, bribery and improper control by rulers.
