Taxis with yellow medallions are an icon of New York City. Currently there are over 13,000 registered taxis and over 50,000 taxi riders carrying passenger through road signs in all five districts. Meallion taxi riders must meet a number of TLC conditions to obtain a license to operate a yellow taxi.

YELLOW CAB CO. became Cleveland's largest taxi company after being granted a local authority in 1934. Yellow Cab Co. was already organised in 1923 in Cleveland and operated from the E.49th St. and Superior. Until 1926 it had apparently joined forces with Red Top Cab Co., changed its name to Cleveland Yellow Cab Co. and relocated to the former Red Top site on Lakeside Ave 1500-1538.
In June 1929, Yellow Cab was taken over by DeLuxe Cab Co., founded in 1927. Jesse T. Smith became chairman in 1929, and DeLuxe began to replace its navy with yellow taxis; in 1930 it became Yellow Cab Co. and relocated to a new 400-car parking facility around 2020 W. 3rd St. Yellow extended its business activities continuously until May 3, 1934, when Taxi Drivers Union Local No. 555 went on strike. 3.
Fewer than six month after the strikes, Yellow heralded that it would consolidate the company with its principal rival, Zone Cab Co., which had been organised by Daniel Sherby in 1930; in 1931, ARTHUR B. "MICKEY" MCBRIDE purchased a majority stake in the company and became its chairman. Mr Smith stayed chairman of Yellow, which became the largest operator in the fusion, with the garages acting as head office.
United Garage Service Corp. was later founded as a parent company for the two enterprises. Over the next 35 years, Yellow Cab benefited from a relatively steady and lucrative year. Throughout World War II it used female driver substitutes for men, and in October 1944 it was the first taxi company to use 2-way radio for shipping.
By 1947, the Borough council maintained the company's exclusive right to provide services within the borough when it declined to pay taxi fees to a group of vets planning to establish G.I. Cab Co. In 1967, there were 481 Yellow and 105 Zone taxi fees in Cleveland Street. However, the expansion of GREATER CLEVELAND REGIONAL TRANSIT AUTHORITY's express services to the 1968 GREATER CLEVELAND REGIONAL TRANSIT AUTHORITY International Airfield in 1968 helped to reduce Yellow's operations; between 1971 and 74, passenger numbers fell by 34%, and Yellow and Zone fell $965,413, despite a 1971 driver-approved pay cut.
The company's issues were exacerbated by a 73% jump in U.S. Environmental Protection Agency fees and natural-gas charges due to violations of clean-air regulations. From 1970-76, Yellow and Zone cut its number of taxi cabs from 1,500 to 761 with a total of 458 cabins. Not until 1977 did the Municipal Assembly allow a tariff rise after Gelb had consented to loosen its dominant position and to give licences to unemployed people.
A decade later, the town abolished Yellow's dominance by permitting operation by any company with at least 25 vehicles. Yellow hired its 240 cabins with salaried operators in 1993 and leased them to operators every day instead.
