Boeing launches 737 MAX-based BBJs on the market

After eighteen years after Boeing and General Electric jointly developed the Boeing Business Jet (BBJ) Next Generation 737, the first business derivate of the successor model 737 MAX was introduced to the market by an unknown client.... In contrast to the original BBJ, which was built on the 737-700, the first MAX-based BBJ ordered is the bigger 737-8, which is conceived as a successor to the present 737-800.

Incorporating the improved aerodynamics and systemic features of the MAX engine as well as the more fuel-efficient CFM Leap 1B engine, the BBJ MAX 8 base line will have a 6,325 nm reach - about 800 nm more than the 737-800 based BBJ2. Though the base plane has a longer cruising distance than the BBJ, Boeing says the BBJ MAX will continue to be available with additional storage bunk.

Boeing says that no suppliers have yet been chosen for the new BBJ, but the latest BBJ is equipped with an assist system designed by PATS Aircraft Systems. The PATS Aircraft Systems, which in April 2013 marks its 150th BBJ upgrade, is installing the storage units at its Georgetown, Del. The PATS system in its seven-tank design provides an extra 3,368 gallons of extra petrol and expands the cruising distance to more than 5,900 nm.

PATS has provided additional tank capacity for each single-aisle BBJ since the BBJ was launched in 1996, with BBJ, BBJ 2 and BBJ 3 (737-900) included. Although the 737-700 BBJ generates most of its revenue, Boeing says: "Plans for a BBJ MAX 7 are still under consideration". So far, the -7 has proven to be the least loved of the MAX versions, with only 55 orders or 3% of the 1,908 planes ordered to date.

However, Boeing says that the BBJ MAX line will feature the bigger BBJ MAX 9, built on the 737 MAX 9, which will have a 6,255 nm outreach.
