Getting to Medellín from the airport

Medellín can be reached from the aerodrome in several ways. Actually, Medellín has two airfields, so we look at how to get from and to the two airfields of Medellín. The majority of travellers who arrive or depart on a flight to or from Rionegro use the José María Córdova Rionegro Internacional Airport. Departure from José María Córdova to Medellín offers a number of breathtaking vistas of the Aburrá Valley with almost four million inhabitants in the town of Medellín.

The Olaya Herrera International Aerodrome is situated in the town of Medellín. Olaya Herrera has only internal Colombian routes with three carriers operating the airport: To get to/from Olaya Herrera the simplest way is by cab. The price should be 10,000 or less according to where you are in the town.

About is another optional for a similar fare to taxi. There are also several buses to Olaya Herrera with prices between 2,000 and 2,100 people. Furthermore, the South Terminal in Medellín is only one blocks away from Olaya Herrera Airport/Mr. The José María Córdova Internacional Aeroporto is situated in the town of Rionegro, about 35 kilometres from Medellín, at a higher altitude.

On the winding street it usually lasts 40 min to over an hours, according to the type of transport, from the José María Córdova to Medellín or vice versa. The construction of a new Túnel de Oriente will cut travel times to/from José María Córdova by up to half.

Jose María Córdova is the second biggest Colombian airline and offers direct connections to 12 destinations in the USA, Europe and Latin America as well as many home destinations in Colombia. Six different means of transport are available to get to Medellín from the José María Córdova aerodrome below.

All six choices also work the other way round to get from Medellín to José María Córdova as well. There are many private cabs at the José María Córdova International Park that have an arrangement to operate the area. At least three firms offer whitepaper service: Aeropuerto Acoa Taxicab, Aerotaxi and Rápido Medellín Rionegro.

There is a price for travelling to Medellín by cab. It is remarkable that at the airports there is even a notice with the tariffs. They should only be paying the regular ticket price and the ticket price will include the tolls on the street. Below is the actual price from José María Córdova International Courtesy Car Transfer to various locations in Medellín: If you take a cab to the Medellín International Courtesy Car Transfer, you can call and plan a pick-up, and in my opinion they always arrive on the spot.

There is a lower price for the cabs to the international airports than from the airports. Below you will find the reduced airfare for private cabs from various areas of Medellín: These rates always take into account the cost of tolls on the main street. Also, be aware that some cab riders try to give the tourist a higher "gringo" rate.

Couple of cab riders tried to bill me for a higher price because they thought I was an innocent traveler. Every single times I could get the rider to pay the ticket price, I would threaten to call his firm and tell him that I had been living in Medellín for many years and knew that the ticket price was that.

Medellín's omnipresent golden cabs are another way to get to the area. In Medellín there are about 30 cab operators listed. There is a 70,000 peso tax for the Jose Maria Córdova from Medellín International Airports tax, including the tolls on the highway. There is also a Medellín cab leader.

It is said that the cabs have an exclusivity agreement with the international airports for the journey back from the city. However, you can find some yellows looking for a flight back to Medellín, and I was able to get 60,000 to Medellín from the airports in a yellows cab.

A further possibility to/from the José Maria Córdova International Park is a co-lectivo or a common Weißtaxi. You will find co-lectivo cabs at the Medellín area. They' re cabs divided by three or four people. Fares are divided among the guests. With four persons, the price is 17,500 US dollars per person.

Collective cabs from the airports go only to the San Diego shopping center in Medellín. In order to get to the international airports with a collective cab, drive to San Diego Mall, about four block from Exposiciones subway stop. Blue airfield cabs are available for those arriving from the Texaco petrol park next to the San Diego shopping centre.

Collective taxi is not a good choice if you have a large amount of baggage. However, the best way to get to/from José Maria Córdova is by using the Aeropuerto busses, as the price is only 9,500 people. Courtesy busses are small with only 19 passengers. Dependent on the volume of transport, the coach from the aerodrome lasts about one hours.

There are two possible targets for the busses leaving the area. If you go in the opposite way to the Puerto dell'Airport, you can go to the stop opposite the San Diego Shopping Centre or behind the Nutibara Hotels in El Centro. Nutibara busses also stop at the main station. Departure busses from the Nutibara behind the main entrance of the Nutibara Park run from 3:45 to 21:30.

In the opposite way, the busses supposedly run around the clock from the Nutibara International Park to the Nutibara Inn. Another way to get to/from the airports is by using similar tariffs as for taxi. The prices from Uber to/from the airports vary depending on the site and kind of Uber-services.

From José Maria Córdova International to El Poblado, for example, the Uber tariff via UberBlack is 64,912 to 76,878 and via UberX 53,385 to 63,511 respectively. Uber's advantages are better cars than cabs (e.g. a Renault Duster SUV or Daihatsu TERIO's Kompakt SUV) and a non-cash payment option.

The use of a personal chauffeur is usually the most costly way to get to/from the IFA. Outside of the customer or luggage reclaim area, a chauffeur waits for you from the terminal with a label with your name and takes you directly to your final destinations. If you go to the airports, a personal chauffeur will pick you up and take you to the airports.

In addition, prices for personal chauffeurs to/from the IFA are usually at least $30 (86,000 pesos) and higher. Here are for example the tariffs for four privately owned transportation companies in Medellín airport: We also have a special item on Medellín transfer from the Medellín airports. Admittedly, however, personal chauffeurs usually use better cars than many of the cabs.

Some of the driver are privately owned and speak English. Medellín can be reached from the six different airports, from cheap bus and taxi to personal transport. Normally I use the whitest taxi to get from the airports to Medellín. I have never had a single issue with over 60 journeys to/from the airports in the last seven years.

Besides, I used the buses and co-lectivo cabs a few used. In my opinion, the hardest period to drive to/from the airports is during the peak night hours. One Friday I once departed the José María Córdova airfield at 6 p.m. and did not return home until 8 p.m. because of the strong airflow.
