An N.S. Koenings novel

That seems like a rather arcane one. With hindsight, it was a surprise that a small amount of a small amount of a certain place and period was available, but I liked the unorthodox frame and artwork, I thought I took a few more years before I could read it.

It is a crucible of Africans, Indians, Westerners and others who made it their home long ago. Amidst this vortex, Sarie Turner, a former nursing woman, experiences an unfortunate incident that will alter the course of her relatively unsatisfactory life. When we visit the Jeevanjee house we find out more about the lonely dad - Majid - when the neighbours began to refer to him.

Majid, unlike the remainder of his mostly famous familiy, is not exactly a huge hit in his business and has been grieving since his spouse passed away years before. Gilbert Turner, Saries Mann, is the third main figure. One of the few aliens who remains in the town after the loss of colonial rule, Gilbert spent his day in a semi-dreamy state of striving for something greater for which he felt determined, while at the same thwarted by the insidious hunch that in an eventless lifetime he would only come to this point.

Apparently satisfied with his ability to find various journey guides to reread and appear as a man of the realm, his influence on his wife's feelings has long since stopped having any effect, and matrimony seems to be an order of comfort to the unavoidable last finger. When Sarie and Majid immerse themselves in an unorthodox matter, one Gilbert is struck by his weakness by an ultimatum from an old man in London who is threatening his scholarship and life style.

Now Sarie and Gilbert have their own ideas of how to turn the menace away and make something of their life again as Majid begins to come out into the underworld. Seems this work hasn' t received much momentum and I'm not sure how much she has written since, but I'd like to try more of her work.

It is a slowly, dreamily reading, but certainly deserving of a look.
