The Donald Carpenter obituary - Fairbanks, AK

Mr Donald (Don) F. Carpenter Jr. died on 3 March 2013 in Fairbanks at the age of 78. For about 25 years Don was living in Alaska, mainly in Fairbanks, but he also stayed a little while in Anchorage. In February 1990 Don landed in Fairbanks with a bag full of $80,000 from working with the drill equipment in the Gulf of Mexico.

Came here to help his old pal Del Zimmer drive Fairbanks cab. Don began building Eagle Cab in the sommer of 1995, with the support of Brad Finneseth and Red Benson. Eagle 1, his first automobile, received his note on June 5, 1995. Don Eagle Cab launched four taxis, mainly estate cars, in August 1995, after a last dispute with Del.

Do Don began with a $1. 50 meters drip, $1. 500/mile installment, which all other taxi companies say holders would not work, but the telephone ringing off the hook, from the beginning, and never stop. In order to make a living in this shop, Don felt he had to sign a rental contract that would cover the costs and make a win.

When United Cab and Yellow Cab collapsed in the fall/winter of 1996, Don purchased their telephone numbers and the name Yellow Cab, which he brought back into service. While other taxi companies were left behind, Don bought their telephone numbers and incorporated them into the Eagle disposition and continued to serve all these taxi clients.

Eagle Cab returned to growth in the 1998 winters with the purchase of the store fittings and the building that used to be Fairbanks Taxi. The transport of the bought cars to Fairbanks seemed to be a bottleneck, not only for Don, but also for one of the biggest used cars dealer of the state. Thus the company Eagle Auto Carriers was founded in 2004.

Eagle Auto Carriers performed well as a sideline tyre, especially after a driver change. Due to rising petrol costs and strong rivalry from the inland navigation to Alaska, however, the auto transporter was resold in 2005. Don withdrew completely from the trucks market in the 2006 Summer when the truck was resold to Moore Enterprises.

Autumn 2005, as the cost of car fuels rose, Don was the first proprietor of a cab business to attempt to use small, fuel-efficient imported goods as cabins. Quite successfully, and now almost half of the 40-car vehicle population is small-scale. Under the ATU flag in the 2012 ATU companies recently added Eagle Autoglass and repair, a full scale car window and car workshop.

Eagle Auto Glas is the standard glazing workshop used by most fleets and several insurers. Besides the ownership of a taxi business, Don was a photographic pro in the 1960' s and a race horse-painter. The survivors of Don are his daugther, Donna Venus Carpenter, and his son-in-law, Randy L. Hotaling, from Fairbanks, his son, Todd Carpenter, from Middleburgh, N.Y., grandchild, Joshua M. Gates, from Fairbanks and grandchild, Christine E..

Gates, from Schenectady, N.Y. He also left behind many boyfriends and partners, among them his two long-time boyfriends and co-workers, Sidney (Sid) Childers and Shpend (Sammie) Dema. Families say that Don's gifts (money or items) can be made either to the Fairbanks shelter or to Cat's Pride. Don't forget to make a donation to Don.
