Carbondale, Illinois is a small Illinois based community of about 27,000 inhabitants in the south of Illinois, about 14 nautical miles eastern of the Mississippi Rivers, about the lower rim of the plain and at the north border of the Shawnee Mountains.... Located in the heart of the capital itself is the headquarters of South Illinois University[7].
The Carbondale is serviced by Amtraks [8] The Saluki, Ilini and City of New Orleans services to and from Chicago (with stopovers at Champaign-Urbana, for example) and New Orleans (stops at Memphis and others) on a day-to-day basis. We also offer charter services. The Greyhound [10] has a railway depot opposite the railway depot.
Carbonondale is located at the intersection of Illinois Hwy 13 and U.S. 51. The majority of those who come come via IL 13 from Marion, where it meets Interstate Highway 57. For those travelling from St. Louis, Missouri, another much more scenic alternative is the IL 3 South to IL 149 East, which crosses the IL 13 at Murphysboro (look for an exits directly on the Illinois side of the Pappel Street Bridge.) Features abound, including the quaint Mississippi river village of Chester, Illinois and the many cliffs offering stunning vistas of the stream.
The BART Airport Shuttle, (+1) 800-284-2278, provides door-to-door services to Carbondale and other southern and central Illinois cities for approximately $70. Carbondale itself has a lot to offer that is within easy reach of the Main and Illinois cities, at least for the most discerning traveller. In general, however, footpaths are the most reliable and unspoilt within the downtown area between Oakland Avenue to the West and Wall Street to the East, and the SIU campsite is an urbane hiking boonza with its many well-maintained and twisty lanes, grass-covered hills, several forests and a lakeside.

Some few places are reserved exclusively for visiting guests, but the best suggestion is probably not to be disturbed as there are plenty of car parks a few block away in the city and the stroll is generally very enjoyable. Many of the city's larger roads have cycle paths, and the smaller roads are generally so tranquil that even the least seasoned city biker should find himself feeling totally secure.
This is especially the case in the districts in the west of the city (mostly occupied by the faculty). Carbondale has a lot to offer if you are looking for a longer trip, especially to the eastern and southern parts. Attempt to drive Grand Avenue towards Crab-Orchard lake (take a small right hand run on Giant City Road).
The Illinois Highway 13, which leads westwards from Carbondale to the neighbouring town of Murphysboro, is unexpectedly bicycle-friendly: the shoulders are cobbled and the width of a full-runway. Total travel from centre to centre is about 7 mile, but with the increase in the integrated parts of the two cities, it is only about 1-6 mile between the two borders.

Carbondale's best inexpensive China Wok dining establishment, China Wok, provides better dining than China Express for those willing to spend a mile away from home. Six hundred E. Subterranean Grill & Pub,[16], 717 South University Avenue, 618 351-0717. The best payoff in Carbondale. The Great Wall China Super Buffet 1285 E. Main St. All you can dine on is China meal. Best El Greco and roasted fungus in the city. 102 E Jackson Street.
The best place in Carbondale. This is the kind of service you would find in one of the best big cities have to offer. Merry Reunion 1901 W. Main Street. Harbaugh's Cafe 901 S. Illinois Ave. The best by far local Chinaman cuisine. Meatball gnocchi is the best village in Italy.

Ranging from the photo frame, which dominates the interior wall with images of former staff, to the dispersed railway artefacts, the Biergarten is the key characteristic of the pub.
Carbondale Hotel is located on Main Street (Illinois Highway 13) on either the eastern or western edge of the city. That doesn't exactly make the simplest trip home from South Illinois Avenue, but there are always taxi companies. Carbondale Railway Inn, 406 E. Stoker St., (+1)618-549-1717 encircled by SIU owned properties, just one min from the Rec Centre and four min on foot from the city centre or Pinch Penny.
Excellent dining and the historical building is a landmark of the city of Carbondale. Day Inn Carbondale, 801 E. Lately the price has dropped a little, thanks to the rivalry from the horizon on the other side of the road.

Only 3 mile from Southern Illinois University and within easy walk of the city's best dining establishments. And if you're looking for an exhilarating night life, it's just a few moments by taxi from the resort.
Somewhat further out (5 miles southern of town/campus), but probably rewarding for car-bound travellers who come mainly for the landscape. Favourably situated, just one kilometer southern of the SIUC campsite.
