National Railways starts general ticket application

Once a shuttle has posted a ticket via the application, they do not have to make a printout and can show their copy to the ticket inspector on their cellphones. Using a cell phones application, railway passengers will be able to purchase non-reserved class ticket numbers beginning in the morning, as India's railway continues its drive for non-paper based ticket sales.

"We' re starting a wireless, papeless, unreserved ticket system tomorrow," said a chief Rail Ministry officer. Once a shuttle has posted a ticket via the apartment, they do not have to make a printout and can show their copy to the ticket inspector on their cell phone. Not only is the zero-paper ticket system a grassroots effort, it also saves travellers a lot of waiting times by avoiding queues at the checkout.

Once downloaded, the licence holder receives a unique ID number to create a rail e-wallet. Ticket purchase funds can be uploaded via the e-wallet portable ticketing system either online or at a ticket office at any location. Travelers will be able to top up the e-wallet with a loan or credit note at ticket offices or on the IRCTC website, the officer said.

In addition to ticket reservations, it is even possible to extend pass extensions via the application, which, as the officer said, will be of great help to non-reserved ticket holders. Trials of the app-based system were conducted on a piloting base in the Mumbai area.
