BAYUIO COITY, Philippines (UPDATED) - When you come to Baguio, don't be wondering if your taxi price is far above what you were expecting. Taxi riders in the town are among the most sincere in the nation, except that the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board in the Cordillera has authorised an escalation of the taxi tariff since early March.
Flagging is still at P35, but now passenger charges are 13.50 P per kilometre and 2 per minutes wait - which is particularly worrying when tourist flow to Baguio and increase congestion. You can do what the locals do, not just greet cabs.
This means their counters aren't yet calibration. So far only those in the lower area have been recalibrated. Some of the cabs also put advertisements on their windscreens: Uncalibrated yet. Calibrating taxi drivers had to choose a GPS navigation system, Wi-Fi, CCTV with 72-hour perpetual record, a desktop video system and online viewing platform.
Several taxi companies as well as the municipal councillor demanded the interruption of the recalibration due to these demands. Editors note: An early version of this tale said the new rates were at P20 per mile. Updated to P13.50 per kilometre.
