The AOPA has compiled a resource and instruction manual to make it easier for anyone to obtain a small UAS certification.

It is necessary to obtain the certification in order to operate a small university of applied sciences under the new FAR Part 107 with effect from 29 August. Leisure and hobby aircraft owners are not obliged to obtain a distance learning licence as long as they observe the specific rules for modelling aircraft. Those without a pilot's certification probably need a trial, and an appointment at an FAA-authorized test centre is needed, while those with an existing certification (except a pilot's certificate) and a recent report can complete the task quickly.

Those who have a pilot's certification (regardless of class, except pilot's students, for each aircraft category) can start the trial immediately. Part 107 SAAS course designed by FAA Safety Team is available now. Successfully completed certification will generate a digitized certification and allow a pilot to apply for the Integrated Airman Certification and Rating Application (IACRA) system to receive the IRTC.

As soon as the request for certificates has been filed through the IACRA (paper request is also an optional but takes more time), the pilots must attend a CFI, a DPE, ACR for a flying training centre or FSDO.

Applicants submit a photograph ID, on-line course diploma, record of a recent report, airline driver's license, IACRA I. D. Number and FAA Track Number (FTN) to conclude the procedure. ACR, FSDO or DPE can provide a transient certification on site; flyers whose CFI validates a document get e-mail instruction from the FAA to retrieve a transient certification on-line.

Those without a pilot's license (or those who would rather choose to foot the test charge and take the FAA test at an authorised test centre) will have to take a little longer to obtain FAA license and will have to await the FAA test on or after 29 August.

They should be acquainted with the certification standard for UAVs - small UAVs - and be ready to be piloted for aviation skills relevant to UAVs, inter alia, aerial space classifications and other topics. Once the FAA has passed the test, the applicant can apply via IACRA for a Pilot Certification via the Internet.

Once the TSA has successfully completed its vulnerability assessment, e-mail notification will be sent to the applicant to provide him or her with directions on how to gain temporarily attached certificates. The AOPA and FAA encourage all claimants who do not yet have an IACRA bank account to immediately sign up in order to speed up the certification procedure and avoid delay. FAA is due to make the use of the Pilot Certification available on 29 August.

Under Part 107, small UAS operators that have been granted an exemption under Section 333 may become active if they obtain the necessary distance piloting licence or may resume their operations under their own allowance. Leisure and hobby aircraft owners are not obliged to obtain a distance pilots licence as long as they observe the specific rules for models.
