Long before the Village of Johnson City was founded, its taped story begins. 1798, Mr. Samuel Allen, the first colonist of today's Johnson City, bought about 400 acres of land for $11.00 per hectare in today's Johnson City.
The Crockers, Andrews, Jennisons and Brighams were other early pioneer groups. In 1854 John Wells and Elijah Brigham founded the first brickworks in the village. The Lester family, on the advice of George F. Johnson, an associate of the firm, chose to build their new footwear plant on the banks of the Binghamton stream.
During 1888 and 1889 they bought enough space to build roads, to build their own villages and to build plots for houses. The Lester Brothers Boot & Shoe Company in 1890 constructed the first 400-foot long, 50-foot broad and four-storey high footwear plant along the D.L. & W. Railroad in the later Lestershire town.
Further shops after the Lester family in the village were a paintbrush plant, Roberson's Lumber Co. and the 1900 WasherCo. Lester decided to concentrate their energy on the home improvement, which put the footwear firm at a disadvantage. Subsequently, the firm was taken over by Mr Henry B. Endicott, a leading shareholder and producer of synthetic leathers.
Mr Endicott changed the name of the business to Lestershire Manufacturing Co. and named George F. Johnson General Superintendent. 1899 George F. Johnson bought half of the business with $150,000 loaned by Mr. Endicott and the Endicott-Johnson Corporation was born. It and its proprietors established a public libraries, constructed park and apartments for its employees, and assisted with the electrification of Main Street.
It also provided health services for its employees and their family. Harry L. and C. Fred, George F.'s brother, play an important role in the village's devellopment. It was Harry L. Johnson who was heavily involved in developing a policy of equitable labour at the plant. Fred Johnson, a trailblazer in organised fire safety, was the father of the village's salaried fire department.
Johnson, Jr. designed recreational centres and founded a retirement home for Endicott Johnson staff. By the peak of its expansion, Endicott-Johnson was employing 20,000 workers in the region. Unfortunately, the last Endicott-Johnson production plant, constructed in 1945, was shut down in 1993. This village still has many attractions related to the Endicott-Johnson Company.
Lestershire village was re-named the Village of Johnson City on 21 March 1916 to honour George F. Johnson and his ancestors. The annexions have been an important part of the Johnson City story. First came in 1918, second in 1922, third in 1936 and forth and biggest, the Oakdale Annexation, in 1962, which enlarged the village by almost a third.
In the 1960s, the decline was a period of enormous changes in the town. 1967 the building works on the NYS Route 17 (future I-86) crossed the hamlet from eastside to westwards. In order to make room for the motorway, many houses were torn down, along with the small Johnson Field ball field.
The Johnson field was home to the Triplets, a small NY Yankees football team. Arena ballplayers saw some of the most illustrious gamers of the match on this pitch, among them Joe DiMaggio, Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig. Route 17 was an important part of the village's evolution in the 1970s and 1980s.
Oakdale Mall's great commercial triumph resulted in further development in this area of the village, among them Giant Oakdale Plaza, Johnson City Plaza, Toy's R Us, Wegman's supermarket and the building of four hotel complexes. Despite the fact that the importance of Endicott-Johnson for the area has decreased, this decrease has resulted in a greater variety of industry activity.
A number of small electronic businesses are based in the industry centre of Johnson City and other retail operations are spread across the village and historical city centre. Oakdale region expansion involved the building of a new grammar college in 1970, four housing estates and innumerable houses. Wilson Memorial Medical Center was named to honor its status as a large local medical center.
The village grew further in the 1990s with the advent of the Carpathian Hill property comprising the building of offices, the home of WBNG-TV, Highlands Senior Housing and a number of housing estates. This village is proud to be the home of the Binghamton University School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, due to open in 2018, and the Decker School of Nursing.
