History[edit] The Austrian Airlines AG, partly called Austrian for short, is the Austrian flagship and a Lufthansa affiliate. 3 ][4] The airline's headquarters are located on the Vienna International Airport site in Schwechat[5], where it also operates its own hubs. Founded in 1957 through the fusion of Air Austria and Austrian Airways, the company goes back to its beginnings in 1923 when Austrian Airways was founded.

Expansion took place in the year 2000 with the acquisition of Rheintalflug and Lauda Air, and in 2003 the carrier took over the abbreviated Austrian name. Austria suffered several years of loss throughout the whole ten-year period and in 2008 its owners, the Austrian authorities, were told to divest the carrier to a non-Austrian operator. The Lufthansa Group acquired the carrier in 2009 after having received the European Commission's clearance following an inquiry into the tender procedure.

Walter Barda-Bardenau was granted the Austrian government's consent to establish an air carrier on 3 May 1923. It acquired a one per cent stake in the recently founded Austrian Airlines (Österreichische Luftverkehrs AG), the remainder being held by Österreichische Bahn (50%) and Junkers-Werke (49%). Several destinations in Austria were operated by water planes.

Following the German accession of Austria in March 1938, these blueprints were discontinued. From 1 January 1939, the carrier was completely under the Lufthansa's aegis. Austria was divided from Germany after the Second Word war and remained without a domestic carrier. Austria Airlines was created through the fusion of Air Austria and Austrian Airways into Österreichische Luftverkehrs AG.

Started operating on 30 September 1957 and made its debut on 31 March 1958, when a Vickers Viscount 779 lease took off from Vienna for a regular air journey to Zurich and London. At the beginning of 1960, six new Viscount 837s were supplied to the carrier. Sabena' s flights began on 1 April 1969 with a Vienna to New York via Brussels in cooperation with Sabena.

Initially, Austrian Airlines had to compete with Adria Airways; travellers from the Austrian federal states of Styria and Carinthia commuted to Yugoslavia to use today's Slovenian airport. On 18 February 1963, Austrian ordered its first aircraft, the Sud Aviation Caravelle, and the aircraft was in service until 1973.

In 1971, Austrian quickly began standardizing its aircraft in favor of nine Douglas DC-9-32s, which were used for many years on scheduled services. 1977 Austrian together with Swissair became the first client for the DC-9-80 (or McDonnell Douglas MD-80). 1984 Austrian became the first client for the MD-87 and plays an important part in the MD-87s.

During the 90s, airlines concentrated on cooperations and alliance arrangements. Austria was one of the first enterprises to join the Qualiflyer Group established by Swissair. Austrian became a member of the Star Alliance in 2000 and took over Lauda Air. The name was abbreviated to Austria in September 2003 when it was changed into its three parts.

1 ] On 1 October 2004, the operational divisions of Austrian and Lauda Air were combined into a unified entity, so that Lauda Air is only a trade name for charters. Tyrolean Airways, the other airline specialising in local services, was combined with Rheintalflug. Austria was compelled to implement a strict cost-cutting strategy in October 2006 and cut over 500 jobs in 2007.

Another three Fokker 70' s were sent to Tyrolean Airways. With the exception of London departures and 100-minute departures, Austrian Airlines decided not to offer free in-flight snacks and alcohol on short-haul routes and introduced a self-select bistro service. Austrian Airlines AG stock was blocked on the Vienna Stock Exchange on 4 February 2010.

After a period of insecurity following the departure of Thierry Antinori[17], the appointment of Jaan Albrecht as new Chief Executive Officer in 2011 marked the beginning of a new age for the carrier, with an improvement in the number of passengers and a more strategical positioning within the Lufthansa family. Following the conclusion of the airport extensions at Vienna International Airport, the carrier now has more scope for further extensions.
