Calcutta's transportation system is a mixture of state-of-the-art bulk transportation and the old transportation methods like the rickshaw. Calcutta is linked to the remainder of India by the National Highways, the vast Indian Railways and also by plane. Calcutta is the main route to northeast India.
The Howrah Brigde and Vidyasagar Setu are two Brigdes that connect Calcutta with Howrah across the Ganges. The Vivekananda Setu is the third viaduct over the tributary of the tributary stream at the north edge of the town near Dakshineshwar. As Calcutta, like other towns in India, is suffering from jams, a net of highways such as Kona Expressway and Belghoria Expressway, overpasses and widenings of the south part of the Eastern Metropolitan Bypass will be built to facilitate access.
Calcutta is linked to other parts of India by the National Highways 2, 6, 34 and 117. Belghoria Expressway links NH 34 to NH 2 and 6 via Nivedita Setu, while NH 117 is linked to NH 6 via Kona Expressway via Vidyasagar Setu. Calcutta is well linked to the remainder of India by an extended rail system of India's highways.
There are two departments of the India railroads - the Eastern and the South Eastern ones - based in the town. Howrah and Sealdah are the two main train stops in the town. The third one, Kolkata, was recently built. Located in North Kolkata, this centre can be accessed via a street opposite the RG Kar Medical College just past Shyambazar.
SER's and ER's electric commuter train networks are vast and extend far into the neighboring North 24 Parganas, South 24 Parganas, Nadia, Howrah, Hooghly, Burdwan, Midnapur etc. counties. This circular route circles the whole of Calcutta and is currently being expanded. Calcutta was the first South Asian town to have an metro, which went into operation in 1984.
Subway is a very well serviced and neat system. Calcutta's subway line is mostly subterranean, which distinguishes it from Delhi and Bangalore subways (Namma subways), which are mostly above ground. From Noapara in the northern part, the line goes southwards through Park Street, Esplanade in the centre of the town, to the southerly end in New Garia.
New subway routes are being constructed for other parts of Calcutta, such as an east-west passage connecting Howrah with Salt Lake Sector 5. Calcutta subway, although not as fashionable as its India equivalents, has praiseworthy criticisms for its services and quotes various useful features such as cheap tickets, cleanness and other amenities.
Calcutta has an extended bus and coach fleet, both public and not. There is no centralised ticket system and you have to buy seperate ticket for busses, subways, streetcars and rail. There are also several organizations that operate coaches, a CSTC ( Calcutta State Transport Corporation), CTC ( Calcutta Tramways Company), WBSTC ( West Bengal Surface Transport Corporation), etc., and several public transport companies.
You can also find different kinds of private coaches. State-operated busses are operated by several public bodies including Calcutta State Transport Corporation (CSTC), South Bengal State Transport Corporation (SBSTC), North Bengal State Transport Corporation (NBSTC), West Bengal Surface Transport Corporation (WBSTC) and Calcutta Tramways Company (CTC). Official busses have no color coding and can only be recognized by the corresponding icon (CSTC or CTC or WBSTC) on their bodies.
Normally these busses are either large busses (CSTC, CTC & NBSTC) or smaller busses (WBSTC & SBSTC). The signposts of the private/mini busses also mention the continuous (via) stops. Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) recently launched large and longer coaches.
Outstanding, these busses have LEDs that indicate the routes, sources, destinations and favourite stations. Busses often stop to collect a guest waving to the coach. WBSTC & CSTC recently launched air-conditioned coaches. As part of the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM), these busses were accepted as part of commuter comforts.
WBSTC (West Bengal Surface Transport Corporation) operates air-conditioned busses directly and through outsourced operations. Tata Marcopolo and Volvo low-floor busses serve these coaches. This bus service links places such as the airport, Barasat, New Town, Rajarhat, Salt Lake Sector-V, Howrah Rail Link Train Terminal, Santragachchi (a stop on the Howrah Kharagpur line) and Kudghat, Tollygunge.
Calcutta's roads are huge. CSTC also introduced air-conditioned busses from July 2014 on 28 different lines through the town and the outskirts. Long-haul busses that travel from Calcutta to various locations such as Bakkhali, Digha, Siliguri and other towns come from the main coach terminal in Dharmatala (commonly known as Esplanade).
Recently, air-conditioned cabins (known as "Blue Arrow") and maritime cabins (powered by CNG ) were added. However, recently ORIX Auto Infrastructure Services Ltd. in Calcutta launched an air-conditioned radio taxi company called "Calcutta Cab" with fleet of Indigo Marina only, which has become more popular with urban residents because of its convenient seating, GPS surveillance, digitally tamper-proof measuring instruments, receipts printer and reference points.
There are also Mega Cabs with the same equipment. A few other future radio taxis being brought into town are Fast Track, Uber Black, Ola, Easy Cabs and Meru Cabs, which are quickly becoming established due to some strike by cabworkers. In Kolkata the inhabitants were confronted with rejection and overburdening for a very long period of times, so the state administration took some important measures.
Since December 2013 Calcutta has been equipped with a new NOR refund taxi hire line. Calcutta is the only town in India with a tramway system. The tramways are managed by the Calcutta Tramways Company, a West Bengal company's governing body, the CTC. Due to the integration of tramway rails into the carriageway pavement, the overall pavement has become more smooth, which partially facilitates transport [quotation required].
Although streetcars are environmentally sound, the major disadvantages of streetcars are that they move slowly and take up a great deal of street flooring, which is less the case in Calcutta. Numerous immigrants from Bihar and Bengal are participating in drawing back people. Masculine drawn ratshas were substituted by bicycle rikshas in South Calcutta.
Due to the amount of work required manually, these ratschas usually travel long journeys and mainly travel in small traffic lanes where busses and car ratschas do not travel. Those pack trucks aren't supposed to drive the major streets of Calcutta. Handcrafted ratschas are mainly found in old villages of Northern Calcata and some old villages of Southern Calcata.
In addition, bicycle ratschas are also a popular means of transportation in many places of Kolkata. Carrikshaws have become a very popular means of transportation for shorter journeys. Tariffs are usually quite low in comparison to other metropolises such as Delhi and Mumbai, the lowest tariff is ?. These car ratschas are not permitted on the main thoroughfares and in certain parts of the town.
Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose in Dum Dum (formerly known as Dum Dum Airport) is the only Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Chandra Bose landing site offering both local and foreign services. Calcutta is also an important harbour, and together with the Haldia docking system, the Calcutta Port Trust is one of the most efficient in the state.
The port of Calcutta offers frequent connections to Port Blair from the Netaji Subhas Docks. Calcutta and Howrah are also linked by ferry boats through the spacious waters of Fairlie Ghat, Howrah Ghat, Shibpur Ghat, Prinsep Ghat, Cossipore Ghat, etc. It is planned to use the channels that run through the town as a waterway system.
In addition to all these means of transportation, as in other towns in India, the walk is a very popular way of commuting between the office and the next train depot or coach stop. Private automobiles, though less in number and use than other major urban centers in India, are rapidly expanding and are becoming the preferred means of transportation for a large number of individuals who benefit from the expanding economies, higher per-head incomes and simple access to credit from finance institutes.
