You' ve probably come across empty cross-country flights before. They may not have used one themselves, but you have probably seen them on one of the many sites that offer cheap personal jets. Void cross country flights become available when a privately owned aircraft has been charters to travel from A to Ba, but must return to A - or possibly even Ca - to complete its next profitable outing.

Owners have to reposition their planes, but with no passenger on the plane, they practically fly at a sacrifice. In order to offset part of the operational expenses, often airlines will quote lower fares to fill the plane. Can you really get a privat jets for a small part of the price of a regular charters?

There is always a chance that when you make an empty booking, the actual trip will not take place, as the primary trip may be altered or canceled, or at very close will. By chartering a personal plane, it will fly on your timetable. It is you who decides when you depart, what is on the plane and, above all, where you will be.

However, with empty cross country flights, things look a little different. Odds of being able to find a plane on a favourite London-Nice trip can be quite good if you're willing to be a little fl exible. To put it another way, no principal charters do not mean empty-haul flights. PrivateFly, the on-line charters specialists, have set up an area for empty flights on their website. On flights where a date of take-off is approaching, the airline will ask you to request a quotation - but if you book further in advance, you can usually get a rate on-line.

Prized flights involved a six-seater Cessna Citation CJ2 between London Biggin Hill and Malaga for 2,750 ($4,000), which would normally be in the order of 8,000 ($12,630). Another website that offers empty cross country flights for purchase is Empty Leg China. Sadly, they do not tell you the regular fare of the flights, so it is hard to see how much rebate is given on the available flights.

Considered a China website, most available flights are either internal flights in China or flights to or from China. An interesting international available plane is a Gulfstream V from Anchorage to Savannah for $50,000. A further full fare on the same date - and at the same cost - is from Beijing to Anchorage, indicating that the plane may be flying back to Savannah for servicing.

Besides flights from one town to another, there are often position flights from two aerodromes in the same town. This could mean for London to fly from Biggin Hill to Luton, a quick jump that has a low cost, but for airplane fans it's a great way to get a new plane guy into their logbook - and also brag about the right thing among mates.
