Hackney Carriage Unit of the Boston Police Headquarters is in charge of the regulation of all taxis, sighting cars, horse-drawn carriages and pedi-cabs in the city of Boston. Boston's taxis, traditionally known as Hackney Carriages, are licenced by the Chief Constable under the supervision of Section 392 of the 1930 Laws.
Hackney Carriage is the oldest special police force established in the same year as the division was established in 1854. Boston's Chief of Police, who has the name of Inspector of Cars and controls the cab business under the direction of the Chief of Police, heads the team.
For the first major review of the Hackney Carriages policy since 1950, the department recently published a major review and welcomed comments on further reviews and up-dates. Keep in mind, if it doesn't say "Boston Licensed Taxi", you can make a poor trip. Elderly Commission is working with the Hackney Division of the Boston Police to offer an accessible transport solution.
