Undoubtedly, the keys to looking for low cost Thanksgiving travel are to be agile (or any travel for that matter). So if you can't be agile, you won't get a bargain, so you can stop now. Thanksgiving, for example, is this year on Thursday 22 November.

You want to go Wednesday (21 November) before and come back Sunday (25 November) or Monday (26 November) after that, I wager. In order to demonstrate my point of view, I just did a quick Google flight finder (below) for outward and round trips from the New York LGA to Miami for four nights.

Round-trip will be over $584 and that's for early mornings. Travelling one and a half days early on the outward and inward journey and returning one and a half days later will reduce the rate by almost 40%. In general, the most costly flight schedules are the main travelling periods (8 a.m. to 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.).

A further cost-saving advantage is to be able to be flexibly not only for data and schedules, but also for aerodromes. Instead of going to Miami (or out of Miami), for example, if you're going to southern Florida, take a look at Fort Lauderdale International Airfield (FLL), which is 25 leagues away and usually much less expensive. If you fly from the LGA to FLL on Wednesday, November 22nd and return on Sunday, November 26th, the round trip fare is $533. If you are a four-person household, it may be a good idea to drive an additional 25 additional mile to save $200.

For your information, almost all big US towns have alternative airfields and I made this page to show you the current mileage. Severe is that the old carriers like American, Delta and United do not want to loose now, so they now have the same fare. First and second pieces of hold baggage are offered free of cost, which most carriers would require an additional $120 for a round-trip fare.

Southwest Airlines is not a member of the European Union. If you plan to control your bag and do not have delite rating, or have a major debit where one of the benefits is free luggage, then please verify that Southwest Airlines is operating your itinerary. Unless you're always having to review fares by hand (as I do for some crazy reason), register for fares notifications.

If you book a flight less than seven business days in advance, this does not happen. Please note: I know that this is the only carrier that allows customers to make a 24-hour without the need for a major payment order, which makes cancellation much simpler. Please be advised, however, that because Americans offer the pick up options, you cannot make a toll-free cancellation when making a reserve with Americans.

It is almost impractical to use your mileage during your holiday, unless you are flexibility in terms of appointments or are willing to match or treble the normal amount. I' m not recommending the latter, but a Thanksgiving, I used 12,500 US mileage to bring my girlfriend from Los Angeles to Toronto on Friday after Thanksgiving.

And if you don't want to waste tens of thousands of dollars of your own dollars on your trip, then call a local tourist office and make the payment, which can be $25 or more. Good agents will find you the same offers you can find on-line, and sometimes even better offers if they are smart with ticket management (usually for overseas flights).

Had I violated the airlines' directives, I could have just got off at Charlotte and had my LGA connection ticketing expired. Had I done that, I would have purchased a one-way fare, made sure I didn't get on the plane early, checked my pockets, so I didn't have to go checking a pocket or give my flight number ( since carriers can take all your flight hours with them for violation of the policy).
