Mike Chase informs about two favorite aircraft to evaluate the Citation CJ4 in this month's Aircraft Comparative Analysis. One 2015 CJ4 Citation has a listed value of $9.414 million. It will take into account production metrics (payload/range, velocity and cab size) and provide present and prospective markets for Textron Aviation's Citation CJ4.
Bombardier's Learjet 31A/ER Bombardier attracts the attention of the market. The CitationJet is a low-wing monoplane with T-tail, pressurised cab and propulsion from two turbo-fan thrusters fitted to the aft hull. Launched in 2005, the CJ4 is a straight line model of the CJ3 and adds another two legs to the CJ3 Cab.
On May 5, 2008 the first CJ4 commercial aircraft took off, with the first shipments in 2010. The Citation Sovereign also features a different glider shape than the previous CJ versions and uses a moderate arrow shape similar to the Citation Sovereign. The Citation CJ4 became the biggest member of the CJ series with more power (two Williams International FJ44-4As) than its predecessor, longer blades and one of the most progressive flying deck in its segment, but with eight passengers it still belongs to the Light Jets group.
Altogether there are currently 1,382 CitationJet aeroplanes in service, as shown in Table A, 187 of which are Citation CJ4s. 178 hundred percent Citation CJ4s are in service around the world, nine of which are co-owned and none in fractions. North America has the biggest share of the fleets by continents with 79%, followed by Europe (14%, i.e. 93% together).
Load Capacity & Range The information in Table B is taken from Conklin & de Decker and the May 2015 edition of B&CA. Available maximum propellant payload' for the CJ4 is 1,052lb, which is less than the Learjet 31A/ER (2,000 pounds). Furthermore, the consumption of each airplane is presented in this area.
According to the aircraft cost calculator, the Citation CJ4, which combusts 188 gph (GPH), consumes six gph more than the Learjet 31A/ER (182 GPH). According to Conklin & de Decker, the Citation CJ4' s cab space is 293 ft3 and its cab length 17.
The Learjet 31A/ER has a slightly lower cab interior at 281 cu feet (4. 3% less). Length of Learjet 31A/ER at 12. Table A (courtesy of UPCAST JETBOOK) shows that the Citation CJ4 provides a greater cab elevation but less cab width than the Learjet 31A/ER.
Reach Comparison As shown in Diagram B and with Witchita, Kansas as the starting point, Citation's CJ4 shows more range than the Learjet 31A/ER and, according to the ACC, reaches most of the lower 48 states and Mexico non-stop. Please note: For jet and turboprop applications, the'Seats Full Range' indicates the plane's long range cruise range using all passengers manned.
NBAA IFR reserves are calculated for a 200nm alternative, according to ACC. Engine Details As already noted, the Citation CJ4 is driven by two Williams International FJ44-4A units, each providing 3,621 lbs of thruster. Two Honeywell TFE731-2 Honeywell TFE731-2s, each with 3,500 lbs, are used in the Learjet 31A/ER. Costs per Mile Based on the information provided in the B&CA Planning and Purchasing Manual of May 2015 and the B&CA Operations Planning Guide of August 2015, we will be comparing our aircrafts.
Countrywide Jet-A mean gasoline prices used since the August 2015 issue were $5.25 per gal at the date of going to print, so we will present the figures as reported for comparative purposes. Please note: The petrol prices used by this resource do not constitute an annual mean value. Diagram C shows the per-mile charge and compared the Citation CJ4 with its competitors, taking into account immediate charges and each plane performing a 600nm flight with a load capacity of 800 pounds (four passengers).
Citation CJ4 shows a charge per navigational miles at $3. 08, that's 11. Five percent less than the Learjet 31A/ER at $3.48. The " costs of all variables " shown in graph D are the costs for fuel costs, maintenance personnel costs, planned part costs and other travel costs.
Total variable costs for the CJ4 citation are $1,273, which is 22. Four percent less than the Learjet 31A/ER at $1,641. Plane comparison table C contains the Vref Pricing Guide price for each canopy. Conklin & de Decker provided the mean speeds, cabins and payloads, while JETNET provided the number of operating planes and the selling rate.
Citation CJ4 at 4.4% has less than 10 per cent of its current fleets "for sale". The Learjet 31A/ER is equipped with 13. Averages of new and used transaction per months are almost the same for both four and three aircraft, respectively, as shown in the last row of Table C. Aircraft with a depreciation plan held and run by companies are often subject to personal depreciation under the Modified Accelerated Cost Recovery System (MACRS).
MACRS allows tax payers to speed up the amortization of asset values by making a higher deduction rate in the first years of each restoration cycle (see Table D). However, in certain cases aeroplanes cannot be eligible under the MACRS system and must be written off under the less favourable Alternative Amortisation System (ADS), where amortisation is calculated on a straight-line basis, which means that identical allowances are made in each year of the respective restoration years.
For the most part, the recoveries under ADS are longer than the recoveries available under MACRS. The taxpayer must consider a wide range of issues when deciding whether to depreciate an aeroplane and, if so, the right depreciating technique and the right restoration timeframe to use. As an example, aeroplanes used for charters (i.e. part 135) are normally amortised under MACRS over a seven-year horizon or under ADS over a twelve-year horizon.
Qualifying commercial jets, such as Part 91 services, are generally amortized under MACRS over a five-year or six-year grace period using ADS. Certain uses of the airplane, such as non-business travel, may affect the amount of allowed amortization available in a given year.
An example of the use of the MACRS timetable for a Citation 2015 CJ4 plane in residential (Part 91) and charters (Part 135) operation over a period of five and seven years, based on a used retailer value of $9,414 million per Vref price leader, is shown in Figure 8. shows a value and demand diagram for the new and used Citation CJ4 inclusive Learjet 31A/ER.
Citation CJ4''s second hand engine fleet is currently showing a fleet of nine "For Sale" planes, two of which have an offer value, so that we have included these two. There are other used corporate jet aircrafts of a similar type with asking values of $1.5m-9 million. The equations we have deduced from these asking values and other applied metrics should allow vendors and purchasers to match and adapt their quotes as appropriate.
It has been shown that the newly/used Citation CJ4 markets react to at least four characteristics: Year, height of cab, quantity and price. The dots in graph F are centred on the same airplane. Full load range and available fuels; 2. long-range cruising speeds to reach this range; 3. available passenger and facility cabins.
While others may opt for other criteria, serious corporate jet purchasers are usually struck by price, range, speed and cabinsize. Considering price, range, speed and cab dimensions, the Citation CJ4 has a high degree of efficiency. The CJ4' s favorite features are range, cab height, and lower hours and cost of ownership.
The CJ4 has, however, the higher purchase cost and the significantly lower useful load capacity of the airplane in our analyses. Abstract In the previous sections, we have addressed some of the attribute values valued by corporate jet carriers. Citation CJ4 is still very much in demand today. We expect the Citation CJ4, which began shipping in 2008, to perform very well in the new and used marketplaces in the near-term.
