Disposable flight offers

Choose "one-way" (even if you are making a return trip - you choose only the cheapest days on which you fly out first). WOW: $69 single fare to Europe now on offer California to Europe for $69? Transatlantic tariff wars could be initiated if the carriers that already provide some of the lowest priced ticket services between North America and Europe go into action. On Tuesday the low-cost airline WOW introduced 99 one-way rates for its Los Angeles and San Francisco services to four European cities.

Tariffs - good for 15 January to 5 April travel - are now being offered on connections to Stockholm, Copenhagen, Bristol, England and Edinburgh, Scotland. The WOW calculated the rates as "the cheapest air fare to date" for passengers traveling between California and Europe. However, there was an starlet for the favourable tariffs.

The $69 fare was widespread in L.A. and San Francisco, but the lowest fare on these flights was between $129 and $199. On Tuesday, WOW also introduced Sub$100 tariffs from two of its East Coast targets. The WOW said that Miami and Boston tariffs would be available for $99 per leg to Iceland.

WOW sold ticket for $129 per leg from Boston and $149 from Miami on the Paris, London Gatwick, Amsterdam, Berlin Schönefeld and Frankfurt connection. Ninety-nine California tariffs are the most likely to make the news. One WOW tariff declaration said they would be available "for a temporary period", although the airline's founding father and CEO, Skúli Mogensen, said today in the skies that he was keen to make the lowest rates a normal offer.

However, what is to come is a potentially crushing lawn war with Norway Air, another fast-growing ultra-low-cost airline that is also quickly spreading on flights between the US and Europe. It is probably no accident that the $69 tariffs just advertised came from WOW after Norway Air civil servants spend much of the vacation time for a flash of news in the EU that promises $69 tariffs between Europe and the United States sometime in 2017.

But Mogensen was a little more judged when he was directly asked if WOW's $69 rates were in answer to the Norwegian gossip. Travellers wishing to secure cheap rates for WOW (or their rival Norwegian) should be aware that they are likely to charge a premium for almost anything beyond a guarantee seating position somewhere on the aircraft.

Norwegisch works according to a similar pattern. The WOW already flies from its hubs near Reykjavík to Baltimore/Washington, Boston, Los Angeles, Newark Liberty and San Francisco. Later this year, the airline will introduce two new US flights to Miami in April and Pittsburgh in June. Regarding the tariffs that had been advertised on Tuesday, Mogensen said he anticipated that WOW's East Coast tariffs would ultimately fall to the same $69 level they had introduced for the Californian high.

Air fare from Baltimore, Boston and Miami stayed at $99 per leg until Tuesday mornings. At the moment, however, we are concentrating on the Californian one. WOW offered Canada clients rates as low as $99 CDN (approximately $75 US) for connections from Toronto and Montreal to the major capitals of Europe, Copenhagan, Stockholm and Bristol.
