For most low-fare lines, all tickets are charged on a one-way basis. Without competitive pressure, the major airlines tend to make one-way tickets significantly more expensive than half return fares. Sometimes legacy lines even calculate one-way tickets in less than one round trip. No matter whether you are booking a domestic or short-haul flight, or thinking of international and long-haul travel, you will find cheap one-way fares for all types of flights. But the problem with one-way tickets is not so much with immigration as with the airline.

When a low fares line goes where you want to go, you'll find a one-way pass halfway the way or less, according to season, tax, fee and the like. Without competition, the big carriers have a tendency to make one-way fares significantly more expensive than half return fares. Sometimes even single fares are calculated in less than one roundtrip by legacy routes.

Often you will find much lower one-way rates if you are willing to forgo non-stop traffic and instead agree to a stop, a plane switch or a diversion. What is the best timing for booking international airfare? Ed Perkins has been researching travels for more than three years.
