The Stansted International airport was initially known as RAF Stansted Mountfitchet, which was used during the Second World war. After 1945, Stansted was used for RAF camp use and between 1946 and 1947 to house POWs. Following the Napoleonic Wars, the Ministry of Civil Aviation used the aerodrome as a basis for several British charters and the aerodrome remained used by the civilian population, with BAA taking possession in 1966.

In 1969, Stansted opened its first purpose-built facility and in the following year further extensions of the facility were concluded to meet the increasing number of passengers. Long-distance international transport was launched from Stansted at the beginning of the 90s. The London Stansted Airport is situated in Stansted Mountfitchet in Uttlesford in Essex and is only an hour's car ride from central London.
