Isn' it a lot less expensive than a regular taxi ride?
It is available in several Portuguese towns such as Lisbon, Porto and the Algarve. Uber has been banned and protested by many taxi riders, but it looks like Uber will remain here. It is also not the only taxi application you can use in Portugal.
Several others like Cabify, Taxiify and MyTaxi are available in a few places - mainly in Lisbon and Porto. Isn' it a lot less expensive than a regular taxi ride? In Portugal cabs are actually quite cheap and, although often a bit less expensive, it doesn't fall below them so much. Advantages of using Uber over a conventional taxi are its use: the taxi is a very good way of getting around:
Describe how to load Uber? There are many e-mails I get from folks who have never used Uber before, and some who have never yet downloaded an application that panics because they think they need to use Uber when they come to Portugal. They should enjoy a visit to Portugal with a taxi.
Yes, some of the chauffeurs at the airports will charge you too much, but because taxi cabs are usually quite inexpensive in Portugal, it won't do you much good. Also not all taxi driver charge too much. It is available in Lisbon, Porto and the Algarve. There will be no problems with getting a berth in Faro and the seaside cities of Albufeira, Lagos and Armação de Pêra, but you may find it difficult to find a berth in the Algarve's countryside.
Uber is available in Lisbon and Porto throughout the town. I had no problem getting around with Uber and could take a taxi within a few moments after I had requested one. I was also able to get a berth on the edge of both towns. Shall we support Uber?
Cabmen in Portugal hates over. They had to get taxi licenses, and now a new group of locals is arriving in their area without having to do the work. And I can appreciate the disappointment that there is a surge of rivalry that threatens their livelihood.
However, although I sympathize with this disappointment, I don't necessarily sympathize. Taxi industries are an area that needs to be changed. Taxis in Lisbon often charge the tourist a higher rate or take a longer distance than necessary. At the Algarve it is also hard to take a taxi later in the evening. Lots of taxi riders leave before 12 p.m., which means that many riders are drinking and driving there.
If you allow Uber to work there, it means that there will be more cabs and more riders willing to work too late overnight. What did taxi driver say about Uber? Did they make sure that some chauffeurs worked the shifts so that they could get cabs later in the day?
In October 2016, Lisbon taxi riders protested against Uber and blocked Lisbon International airport with their vehicles. This kind of behavior makes it less likely that I want to take a Lisbon taxi rider and more likely that I want to use something like Uber. Did you use Uber (or any other taxi app) in Portugal?
