Airline companies cancelling more flights on weekends

The hurricane Florence struck North Carolina on Friday mornings with peak wind speeds of 90 km/h and led to flights being cancelled in the southeast over the week-end. A number of regional aerodromes have ceased operation. Charleston International Airport spokesperson said flights were cancelled at least until Friday evening. Airline companies have cancelled more than 700 flights planned for Friday.

Approximately 200 flights, i.e. about half of the take-offs and landings at Raleigh-Durham International Airport, were cancelled. Over 400 flights to and from the area planned for this week-end have also been cancelled, according to the trace page FlightAware.com. More than 1,500 flights were cancelled, a very small number in comparison to last year's cyclone seasons, when three disastrous cyclones - Harvey, Irma and Maria - cancelled more than 20,000 flights last year that affected the hub of the big carriers.

Air carriers asked travellers to supervise their web sites in order to obtain information about the storms. On Thursday until at least Friday evening Southwest Airlines ceased to fly from Charlotte Douglas International Airport. Americans cancelled more than 800 flights to and from the area until Sunday, but said they did not anticipate that the storms caused them to cancell flights at their Charlotte turnstile.

The American, Delta Air Lines, JetBlue Airways and United said that they limit some air fare to a level below the costs of last-minute passes. Last year, airline companies were criticised in public opinion polls when tariffs rose before windstorms. In times of high traffic volumes, last-minute tariffs generally rise and carriers have to adjust rates by hand in the event of incidents such as a major thunderstorm.

Airline companies also renounced charges for connecting flights, luggage and domestic animals in the cabins for passengers who might be affected by the storms. The Charlotte International Airports said its personnel on Wednesday inspected back-up energy and utilities such as back-up energy and storms channels. Airline companies generally provide disclaimers and early cancellations so that passengers are not grounded at the airports and crew are not out of place when resuming service.

Interruptions could stop after the madness. FAA said it could limit air travel, passengers included, to clear air space for emergencies. This could interfere with the flights until the midweek. Others with staff in extraction areas closed before the thunderstorm.
