Sales Airline Flash: Getting low cost airline seats
Fiercer rivalry, lower cost fuels, a strong US dollar and a weakening US currency and sterling have made airline travel to more costly places than ever before. Several of the most recent, low-cost and credible deal include 99 one-way Norwegian to Dublin and Edinburgh from New York, $199 to Amsterdam from Los Angeles on WOW and $589 to Venice on Delta - plus that $69 transatlantic point rating that drove us mad.
Thanks to United's latest PR fiasco, they have now also lowered their rates and, according to Trave + Leisure, offer "excuse rates" across the country. In order to maximise your own chance of a summery self-ie in front of the Colosseum, we talked to airline specialist Scott Keyes from Scott's Cheap Fellowship' website, the Flashsale alarm site.
It gave Jet Set a glimpse of how to pick up desirable low-cost spots before they disappeared. Search for non promoted rates. "The airline sales announced are hardly ever good enough to buy," Keyes states. "It'?s the unpromoted sales that are really inexpensive. Because if the tariffs are good enough, they need no help to sell themselves.
" Register for fare alerts such as Scott's Cheap and Hopper alerts, as well as Watch Dog and Flight Fishing alerts to keep up to date with the latest flight trend before it disappears. Living in New York? Search for Boston or Washington, DC ticket. Think about finding a flight from San Francisco, Las Vegas or San Diego.
"crossing the oceans as cheap as possible," says Keyes. "but the best ticket I ever bought was a $130 roundtrip ticket from New York to Milan. Had I been insistent on going from DC, not New York, to Milan, the ticket would have been about $800, not the $150 I actually used.
Avoid the tempts to get close to the reservation in this order: Select a travel location, then your data and search it until you find the best itinerary. "Keyes says this leads to high prices." "lf a low-cost trip is your top priority. Reverse the approximation. "Begin by seeing what rates are available through websites like Skyscanner, Google Flights and Momondo.
As soon as you have found a number of travel locations at reasonable rates, select the one that suits you best. One advantage of this is the enthusiasm: Whilst most carriers will show up on Orbitz or Expedia sites, they don't expect to use every last one. "Southwest doesn't appear on airliners.
You have to look directly at their website," says Keyes.
